DOIN' TIME IN TIMES SQUARE$19.99 USDDescribed as the home video from hell, Doin' Time in Times Square documents the view and action outside director Charlie Ahearn's 43rd Street apartment window from 1981 to 1983. Charlie Ahearn, whose 1983 film Wild Style was a cult hip hop hit, was "blessed" with a generous view of the sleeze emporiums up Eighth Avenue and down 43rd. His window provides a view into midtown New York's street brutality in those dark years before it was "cleaned up" and "Disneyfied", His Hi-8 camera captures rip-offs, drug sales, police stake-outs and fights - lots of fights. On any given day we see fist-fights, domestic squabbles and bad deals going down. It is both a social and personal document. DETAILS | ADD TO CART |

THE DEADLY ART OF SURVIVAL$19.99 USDBefore writer-director Charlie Ahearn shot his seminal hip-hop film "Wild Style" in 1982, he was directly exposed to the bourgeoning hip-hop, break-dancing and graffiti movement while shooting his super-8 martial arts epic "No Wave" feature, shot in 1979 around the projects of the Lower East Side, stars Nathan Ingram, a true to life martial arts hero. In his movie incarnation, Nathan, unaware of a contract out on his head, is jumped and beaten bloody by a local street gang. Using his martial arts skills he sets out to get revenge and is pitted against a group of drug dealers operating from a rival karate school called the "Disco Dojo". The local handball courts were painted by graffiti legend Lee Quinones, who went on to star in "Wild Style". In fact, this film is the film that lead directly to the making of "Wild Style" and is a must see for anyone interested in the roots of hip-hop at the intersection of Lower East Side art world, in the late seventies. THE GODS OF TIMES SQUARE$24.95 USDThe Gods Of Times Square was shot over a six year period that witnessed a radical transformation of Times Square. Gone now are the mom and pop stores, squeezed out by a real estate gold rush. Gone too are the colorful characters who made Times Square a "speaker's corner". Only the most strident of religious zealots remain to warn of "eternal sin." The Gods of Times Square thus records a time in New York City history when the place most identified with free speech and the soul of New York, changed from a democratic, interracial, common ground to a corporate controlled soulless theme park. The former versions of Times Square offered it's congregants a place to air their thoughts and blow off a little steam, to rant about God and race on the one hand or buy sex or porn at the other end of the Times Square spectrum. Now the choices are fewer, the prices are higher, and the "sin" is gone. The fabled "white way" now plays host to the newest of Gods: Mickey, Minnie and Goofy on one corner, Bugs Daffy and Porky on the other... Gods help Times Square! - Richard Sandler DETAILS | ADD TO CART |

VALLEY FEVER - GREEN ON RED - LIVE AT THE RIALTO$19.99 USD"Meet me at the monument to Big Dog". So proclaimed Dan Stuart to the scattered members of Green On Red: Chuck Prophet, Chris Cacavas and Jack Waterson. Using the cover of a 2005 anniversary celebration of a fashionable hotel in Tucson Arizona, Green On Red gathered at the Rialto Theater to honor the memory of a fallen comrade, drummer Alex MacNicol. Sharing the stage for the first time in nearly two decades, Green On Red played an emotional set of sloppy brilliance, meandering into territory best left to those who have climbed the mountain and talked to the elephant. Filmed drifting down Congress Ave by some tourists from Brazil, Green On Red asked the knife lovers if they would care to shoot what was about to occur. The Brazilians didn't understand English but followed the band into the venue. The rest is history, or at least a beautiful lie... shit, what's the difference anyway? DETAILS | ADD TO CART |

TV PARTY - THE DOCUMENTARY$19.99 USDFrom 1978 to 1982, Glenn O'Brien hosted a New York city public access cable TV show called TV Party. Co-hosted by Chris Stein, from Blondie, and directed by filmmaker Amos Poe, the hour long show took television where it had never gone before: to the edge of civility and "sub-realism" as Glenn would put it. Walter Steding and his TV Party "Orchestra" provided a musical accompaniment to the madness at hand, and many artists and musicians, from The Clash, Nile Rodgers, Jean-Michel Basquiat, David Bryne and Arto Lindsey were regular guests. It was the cocktail party that could be a political party.

TV PARTY TIME & MAKE-UP SHOW$19.99 USDGlenn O'Brien says "TV Party is interesting as a TV show, but it's a pretty good painting too." This show opens with a still frame. Just when you're ready to go nuts, a voice reassures: "There is nothing wrong with your television set." And mad action begins. TV Party was cable TV as pop art. It appeared sloppy and crude but it was deliberate sloppiness and crudeness.
